Just warming up
Expressing a history, a childhood, a legend and what is Urdang seems to be an overwhelming challenge, so I thought I would put it out there and see what comes back.
My memories of what is ‘Urdang’ are random, growing up with a mother who had a mission, a passion and a purpose was normal to me and only as an adult I started to realise it was unique and more recently reflecting on how lucky I was to have had this extraordinary upbringing. I get it, I totally get it when I am asked to ‘define Urdang’ or maybe for me it’s simply ‘define normal’? Well, Leonie Urdang the person, Urdang Academy the place has defined not just me, but so many and being witness to the whole thing is really something special.
I was only days old and in my cot placed in the corner of the studio as my mother taught ballet and I’ve been told I just was there quietly watching. Memories of trying on the pointe shoes in secret in the changing room until my feet bled as a toddler and limping home in pain. My mum sending random students to pick me up from school and being bribed with ice cream to dance for the Russians in our lounge. Normal? Well it was just the beginning.
